About Me
Robin has a BFA from the University of Houston in studio art/metalsmithing. She has made jewelry and been a lapidary for 10 years, being known for her unusual stones and color combinations in her jewelry. She's been a seamstress since pre-teen years and a knitter for over 40 years. Always wanting to make her own cloth, it was not until 1997 that she was able to purchase a loom and begin weaving. In 1999 she started spinning after being introduced to the craft while demonstrating at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo with the Contemporary Handweavers of Houston. She has been dyeing her own fiber and yarn since she began weaving and spinning. In addition to Perfect Buttons, Robin sells her handwovens, handpainted yarn and fiber, and handspun yarns at shows around the country. She also teaches knitting and handpainting yarn classes in her studio in the East Mountains of New Mexico (east of Albuquerque) where she relocated in 2003. Robin teaches knitting in her studio in Edgewood, New Mexico, and at other conferences around the Southwest. Perfect Buttons, handpainted yarns, rovings and yarn kits are available at the Tapestry Gallery in Madrid, NM. She invites anyone passing through New Mexico to come by for a visit. Robin is a member of Las Aranas Spinners & Weavers Guild, The Mountain and Valley Wool Association, Intermountain Weavers, Contemporary Handweavers of Texas, and Handweavers Guild of America where she is vice-chair of the spinning learning exchange.
At this Studio, we know that earning an income from the work of your hands has meaning beyond the obvious. It is a yes to authentic and soul satisfying work, a yes to building a life that includes family, culture and community. There is value in taking time to create something handmade, something that carries within it an imprint of the soul of the creator. Despite the messages we are bombarded with every day, not everything in this world has to be faster, larger or more. The individual handmade object, like the individual life, has intrinsic value, a value we resolve to celebrate. |
